Forms - Huh? Yeah, What is it Good For?

Rene Ritchie, March 22nd, 2008

You’re a modern combat athlete. You go to the gym. You spar. You train on the bags. You sprint. And you likely do some type of attribute development, and more than likely that attribute development is systematic, progressive, and designed to get your from point A (your current state) to point B (where you need to get).

While personal training methods, equipment, and protocols have certainly changed over the years, the need to train certainly hasn’t.

What does this have to do with forms like Siu Lien Tao, Chum Kiu, etc.? Good God y’all, absolutely everything!

Praise the Spring!

Rene Ritchie, March 22nd, 2008

Buried here beneath record-setting snowfalls, whole houses and buildings hidden behind new mountains created merely by cold and crystal and plow and plight, its all but impossible to imagine the hardy plum flower blossoming defiantly in the face of harshest winter.

Which, I guess, is the point.

Happy springtime everyone. Yes, even those of you upside-downers rushing towards the fall (we’re on Foshan standard seasons here!)

May your Wing Chun Kuen understanding and application likewise burst forth rejuvenated and renewed.

Secret Diary of Fake Ng Mui - Chapter and Verse

Fake Ng Mui, March 21st, 2008

Twelfth Lunar Cycle, Year of the Wooden Monkey:

Mediating in the deepest cave, the sun warm on my cheek. Yim Wing-Chun has brought the boy with her again. I clench so furiously all orbits complete within me.

I whisper to her a grand secret — there is only one long routine, three volumes bound into a single book. I tell the boy that there are only 36 short forms, focused chapters within the whole.

Later, they argue. I unclench.

They’ve done it — finally — after all these years and all the fears:

Unbelievable !!!

Ron Heimberger Sifu - RIP

News, March 15th, 2008

Our most heartfelt condolences to the families, personal and martial, and our sincere gratitude for everything contributed to the art of Wing Chun Kuen.

One Art, One Association - Ving Tsun Ip Ching Athletic Association

Master Ron Heimberger knew he was not feeling well since August. He wrote it off as being exhausted from his travels, which he was. He continued to fulfill all of his scheduled trips and appearances. No one could slow him down, much less convince him to stop and recuperate. He just pushed on.

While on his last trip to Hong Kong, he was having severe headaches and started losing vision on the right side of both eyes. Instead of canceling his scheduled seminar in New Zealand and coming home, he insisted on making the trip. He did so, not feeling well, afterwards returning to Hong Kong to finish some business. While there, he had an MRI and they discovered that he had a very advanced and aggressive brain tumor that was affecting his vision.

He then came home and insisted on fulfilling his commitments to teach at the seminars that he had already scheduled and to marry off his daughter. With some help from his students, he was able to complete those commitments.

About six weeks ago, he knew he only had so much time, and as he considered the aggressive nature of the tumor, he decided to allow a great surgeon to remove as much of the tumor as he could. He knew this might give him a little more time. He chose, however, not to accept the radiation or chemotherapy, as it did not seem very promising for his particular situation. We, then, gave him the utmost holistic care possible to improve his situation as best we could.

Ever the optimist, and always thinking of others, he would not allow anyone to make any statements regarding his health because he couldn’t stand the thought of anyone worrying over him.

Monday afternoon, while surrounded by his loving family, Master Ron Heimberger parted this world.

Through it all, Master Ron Heimberger did things on his own terms; making his own choices; doing what he wanted to do to the very end.Master Ron Heimberger knew he was not feeling well since August. The Greatest Discovery You’ve Never Heard Of: health physical education

The important thing to remember here is that learning and memory are not just cognitive functions that take place in the brain; they are intimately involved in everything that we do with our bodies, from philosophy to strength training, from poetry to cardio. Just as LTP helps us remember the lyrics to a song or the password to a website, it also help us to remember the physical experience of being strong, fast or endurant. Indeed, more than one aging athlete has remarked that it’s not so much that his tissue is weak but rather that he has forgotten the sensation of physical competence and vigor. Just as getting in shape is a process of learning new sensations and strengthening neural pathways, getting out of shape is a process of forgetting.
